Radio Amigo 96.1 FM broadcast began on July 25, 1961, when 1370 AM KALN (former KIOL telephone lists) signed on air. 1370 in the morning was a daytime operation, as were many radio stations in small towns at that time. The station was founded by Lloyd C. McKenney of Carthage, Missouri, who also owned KRMO, Monett, Missouri and KMDO in Fort Scott. Welcome Stanton was the manager of the McKenney station.
