WFDU (89.1 MHz, 89.1 WFDU) is a non-commercial college radio station licensed at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey. The WFDU studios were founded in 1971 and are located on campus. The transmitter is located on the Armstrong Tower in Alpine, New Jersey. After negotiations with New York University and the Federal Communications Commission, it was agreed that the two universities would share the frequency 89.1 in the FM band. The station's transmit signal has a radius of up to 100 kilometers within the historic Armstrong Field Lab in Alpine. The AFL is home to the world's first W2XMN FM transmitter, built by the inventor of FM technology, Major Edwin Howard Armstrong. With an increase in antenna height and an increase in output to 3,000 watts, WFDU-FM can reach 8.2 million people. In August 2015, WFDU launched two new HD channels: HD2 titled Jazz & What's More for jazz music and HD3 titled Masterworks for classical music.
